We have not been able to move any horses from our property with out DPI approval. This has meant some lost sales, but that is life.

Symptoms of Colic

Colic is the most common disease among horses today and is the 1 natural killer of horses.

Colic can range from severe to life threatening in which case surgery may be needed to correct the problem.

Today with better nutritional knowledge and advanced de-worming products the cases of colic are most often milder than severe.

The causes are many and varied but here are a few:

Overfeeding (feed room bingeing)
Access to sandy paddocks
Parasites
Moldy hay or feed
Non-consistent feeding times
Fine hay & feed
Changes in feed (make gradually)

Symptoms of colic:

Restlessness
Little or no stomach sounds
Lack of appetite
Lying down and getting up repeatedly
Biting or kicking at the belly
Depression
Sweating
Pawing the ground
Stretching as if to urinate (but don't)
Small or no droppings

A horse lives for food and loves nothing better than to eat and eat and eat!

If your horse goes off his feed or seems disinterested in food all together, something is wrong!

At the first signs of colic in your horse call your veterinarian immediately.

They like their itches scratched just like we do.

So, here is a little tip that is so simple that you will wonder why you didn't think of it sooner.

Take some of you old horse bristle brushes and secure them to the sides of your horses stall so he / she can rub against them to get at those annoying itches. Your horse will love it!

Equine Infectious Anemia Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms vary from horse to horse which make EIA difficult to diagnose. EIA can also mimic certain other diseases and some horses may not demonstrate any obvious signs at all! The acute horse may be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are very general and he will not show as positive on the EIA test for a month and a half.

As you can see, this is a very difficult disease to diagnose and may comprise of one or more of the following signs or symptoms:

* Fever (normal temperature of a horse is (99.5 to 101.5 degrees F).

* Sudden fluctuations in the horses temperature (this may exceed 105 degrees F).

* Weak pulse and/ or an irregular heartbeat.

* Rapid breathing and sweating.

* Decreased appetite and weight loss.

* Horse appears depressed.

* Bloodshot eyes and a watery discharge.

* Swelling of the lower chest, abdomen or legs.

* Abortion in the mare.

* General weakness resulting in a wobbly or rolling type gait

* Mucous membranes appear pale or yellowish in colour

Although most horses surrender rapidly to EIA, some infected horses do appear to recover. Horses that have contracted the EIA virus are carriers of the disease and at times of stress may become ill with the disease again.

To insure that your horse is not harbouring the virus a simple 'Coggins test' is preformed.

Contact your veterinarian at the above first signs for advise and information.

Many horse owners have a regular de-worming program for their horses. De-worming your horses is vital to your horses overall health and without a regular program in place your horses will become a host for worms.

Lasting internal damage to your horses will result if you do not have a de-worming program
in place.

There are literally dozens of types of worms that can infest your horses, some worms being more prevalent in different regions of the country and some are more seasonal.

Use of a broad spectrum de-wormer will ensure that all the worms residing in your horses are eradicated. As a rule of thumb you should de-worm your horses every 6-8 weeks.

De-wormers come in pellets, granules and pastes, which will give you a variety of choices for the most finicky of horses. It is always best to rotate to a different brand of de-wormer every month or so to get the best results.

Imprinting the Newborn Foal

Imprinting is a fairly new technique, and everyone has their opinion on how and if and when it should be done. I look for a window of opportunity. This window is usually as soon as the foal if dropped and the mare is busy passing the placenta.

I think this is the perfect time to get some dry towels (or handfuls of straw will do) and rub your new foal all over his/ her entire body. When I say the 'entire body' that is exactly what I mean; the head, neck, legs, belly, feet and don'tforget the inside of the foals nostrils and mouth. Gently rub the inside of the foals gums and tongue and inside the foalsears.

This little act will be very beneficial later on in his/ her training. Remember to do this several times and be very gentle, if the foal resists or seems frightened go back to rubbing gently and petting him/ her.

If you have a little time to spare, put his/ her halter on and off several times, petting and rewarding him/ her every time the foal lets you do something new.Pick up the foals feet and pat the bottoms of each one and rub his/ her legs.

Remember ahead to the things that you will be asking of the foal in the next few weeks and it will make this a more profitable session for you and the newborn. As the newborn takes a standing position again lift the legs and feet a few more times and repeat putting on and taking off the halter in this standingposition.

Later on in the day, or possibly the next day, attach a lead rope and ask you foal to take a step or two, nothing too demanding. Reward the foal with rubbing and petting, keep a eye out for that 'special scratch spot' that makes your foal relaxed, calm and happy to be with you.

Keep up these little sessions every day, 2 and 3 times a day for the first 2-3 weeks. Your foal will learn to trust you and want to be with you as you bond together in these first, crucial, few weeks.

What do you do if your horse throws a fit with the bit?

When a normally, well tempered horse starts throwing a fit when trying to insert a bit, there is usually a good reason.

I would first consider the horse's teeth. Is it possible that you are bumping her teeth with the bit as you are trying tobridle him/ her? If this is not the case, then I would recommend having your horse's teeth checked by a veterinarian.

There are as many reasons that may cause your horses teeth to hurt and this will result in head tossing and a 'hissy'fit.

Your horse may need to have his/ her teeth floated as there may be uneven spots or hooks on the surface of the teethwhich is quite painful.

'Floating' the teeth is a relatively simple procedure.

A dental checkup is a part of good horse care and should be done at least once a year as part of the horse's yearly check-up.

The Quick Release Knot

The main purpose of the quick release knot around horses is to release them quickly. For example in situations where they could be injured.

So the quick release knot is perfect to use when tying and restraining your horse. It is used because it can be undone quickly, even if your horse is pulling back.

The first thing to do is to make a loop around the object you will be tying your horse to. Then place the two ends next to one and other in your hand.

Then form a loop.

And pull another loop through the first loop.

And then pull it tight.

There are a couple of things that you can do to prevent your horse from undoing the knot. The first is to simply put the loose end back through the loop and tighten a bit.

The other knot that you can do to prevent him untying the knot is what we call a double quick release knot. Grab the loose end and pull a loop through the loop formed doing the first knot, and pull it tight.

One final word.

For your own safety we strongly suggest that you keep your fingers and thumbs out of the loops formed while you are tying the knots.

The reason for this is that if the horse pulls back at that instant you could end up with your finger or thumb missing. I have seen it, and it’s not pretty.

What is Anhidrosis (non-sweating) in Horses?

Anhidrosis commonly referred to as 'dry coat', 'the puffs' or 'non-sweating' disease' is the inability for the horse to sweat after exercise.

This condition usually develops in horses that are exercised and stabled in hot and humidweather.

In tropical locations 50 -60% of horses willpresent the disease. Horses that loose the ability to sweat efficiently, will puff and blow to reduce their core temperature.

This is a very serious condition and you should seek medical attention immediately.

Birthing Clues

There is no set timetable, however the mare does give usa few clues that let us know that the arrival is near. Milk fills the mare's udder approximately 2-4 weeks andthe teat become engorged 4-6 days prior to the event. The tail head may become more prominent within a few days of the foaling event and the vulva and croup muscles seemed more relaxed.

Within 1 to 4 days the teats may or may not 'wax over'. Colostrum (yellow, honey colored secretion) usually appears1-4 days prior to birth of the foal. The udders may actually drip several days before foaling so keep a close eye on your mare if you want to be present at foaling time.

As the time gets nearer the mare becomes restless and may appear anxious. She may also appear to be colicky as she getsup and lie's down frequently. The mare may bite at her flanks,and will become very sweaty. She will appear to raise her tailand urinate often, this is usually the first stages of labor.

The birth is eminent!

Colic may still be a possibility and if her behavior is prolonged for more than 1-2 hours and no foaling has begun,contact you veterinarian immediately for his/ her advice. More often than not everything goes as planned with nothing to fear, remember this, horses have been giving birth longbefore we ever arrived on the scene. So take a breath, relax and happy foaling!

Hay Really is for Horses

As you well know horses are herbivores and foragers by nature. Horses eat grasses, herbs and other foraged plantsas a primary source of their daily nutrition. Horses raisedin the wilds do not have access to all the feed supplementsour domestic friends have today.

A content horse is a horse that if allowed to graze 24-7. This is not always possible for our horses, so we have many supplements to help them meet their nutritional needs. One way that we can meet their need to chew (this is very important) and their nutritional needs is quite simple, really.

Feed them a high quality hay on a regular basis! Hays vary in nutritional value and in different areas of the country, so you need to do a little research on the subject in your area.

When purchasing hay for your horse you must take into consideration; energy (equine digestible energy), this reflects how much energy the hay has and how much energy the horse can digest and use. Don't forget about digestible fiber in the hay equation; this is necessary for proper functioning ofthe horse's digestive system.

Alfalfa contains a high percentage of protein (16)-(18%). Grass hays (timothy, bromegrass, and orchard grass) althoughlower in protein (5)-(12%) generally meet the protein requirements for the mature horse. Young horses need more protein for growth but you may need to add more protein to their diet by either protein supplements or soybean meal which has (48%)protein.

On the other hand, too much protein may cause founder and/ orLaminitis, so do your homework. If you are unsure of the nutritional requirements for your horse ask you veterinary for assistance in setting up a good nutritional regime foryour horse.

First of many tips

Over the next few months I will be posting tips on a number of different horse tips.

Here is the first on

Dealing with a herd bound horse.

If your horse is herd bound and gets stressed out whenever you try to separate him/ her from the herd the best thing you can do is gradually wean the horse from the herd.

This is very similar to weaning a foal. Start slowly by taking the horse a short distance from your other horses for short periods of time.

Each time lengthening the time and distance. Soon you will be able to go on short rides with no problems.

Just keep in mind that slow training is training that will be remembered in good ways by your horse.

Selling A Horse Online

This advise is aimed primarily at people wanting to sell their horse online, however the information suits any medium be it a poster on the local shop window to an advertisement in a magazine. But as I said I will be mainly talking online sales.

Most will have a number of options, pictures and number of characters at different costs. Pick the option that best suits your budget. This might be determined by the value you have put on the horse, the number of people you expect to see the advertisement, and how quickly you want to sell the horse.

I am going to skip over the wording that you use as most sites, us included, have limits on the number of words that you can use. Having said that there are a few things that you should include.

One thing that people sometimes miss out is their contact details. That would be a wasted advertisement. On our site we discourage the use of contact details in the ads. We have a contact the seller box under the ad. This way a potential buyer can contact you for more information but e-mail address harvesters do not get your e-mail address to send you spam.

If you are allowed to have 100 characters in the text of your add remember it is not the same as 100 letters. Try not go over the 100 characters, as the operator of the site will/could restrict you to 100 characters.

In most cases they will just cut off everything after the 100 characters. That is where most people have their contact details, so make sure your advertisement conforms to their restrictions.

You can check how many characters you are using by putting the advertisement in a word document, selecting tools, and then word count. That will detail the number of words as well as the number of characters.

It is our experience that advertisements with pictures sell much better than advertisements without pictures.

However, before I chat about pictures, a bit more about the wording of your advertisement.
Use upper and lower case letters. Do not just use only capital letters. It is harder to read and it's like you are shouting at the potential buyer, and most don't like being shouted at.

Sorry to bother you again so soon but this has just come in from Kiri Matenga of AWATEA FARMS in New Zealand.

Hi there,

There is heaps of that happening over here in NZ and the world.

They go right through to sending contefeit cheques for some of the horses that off course bounce.

Ive received some before but put them in the rubbish another mate took them to the police station and reported them.

People dont know it takes them a month to clear and by then some horses have even been sent and then receive bills for transporting or its cost the person heaps to clear the cheque as well.

Most the time they say someone owes me this so they are sending the money to you and can you please send the rest back to me and loose out even more when the cheque is bounced in a months time and they have already sent the rest of the money to these people.

So please make sure people know by doing what you are doing and not reply to them as they are big fraud thing that started in the USA a few years back.

We have decided to add a new package. In a nutshell it is $2 for 60 days, with option for 1 picture and 250 characters.

We think that this will give the people after a quick turnover the option to now have a picture and a few more characters to more fully explain the horse and the offer.

This option is only available for horse sales and stud services.

Could be better to advertise you stallion just for the breeding season instead of for the whole year. Or at least you now have that option.

All of the other options are still there, including the free ad for 1 month.

We have just moved the forum so that only members who are signed on can access it.

This has needed to be done to try and limit inappropriate posts. XXX etc are not appropriate for our site so we have had to make the forum a members only forum.

I have just deleted a post in the forum, because the rules of the forum were broken. The rules of the forum are as detailed below.

1. Be polite with your posts.

2. No advertising other than in your sig. It is OK to provide links in direct response to a question.

3. Keep to the topic of the thread. Start a new thread if you want to diverge to another topic.

Hello, I am back again.

I have been out west living in single mans quarters for a while and have had next to no access to a phone line. Hence no updates etc.

In the near future I hope to have broadband that will be portable and have that all of the time. In the progress of sorting that out now.

I will let you all know when that happens.

We at australasianhorsesales.com.au have got some exciting new things that we are sorting out, but as soon as we decide on the final direction we will let you all know. Both by a post here and via email.

Word of mouth is still the best way to let people know about anything. If every one told only 2 of their mates, and they had a look at the site then 3 times as many people would be looking at your ads.

I am promoting the site as much as I can with the limited resources available to us, so any time you help yourself you help us all.

Have you consider placing a free wanted ad to let others know what you are looking for.

One lady placed a wanted add to buy a float. She has bought a float, but got quite a few emails offering floats. I would like to suggest that if you have a float for sale to use our site. They are all free ads.

From No 2 newsletter

Have a look at the posters and e-books available. Go to http://australasianhorsesales.com.au and then click on the menu options at the bottom of the left side.

We have selected 10 horse posters that will appear on that page, that will then lead you to a huge selection of posters. We think that they would be great gift ideas for any reason but they really suit for Christmas.

They need to come from the US, so do not leave it until the last minute to place your selection. Unlike the posters the e-books can be purchased and then down loaded straight away.

There is also a link to meet other horse people, who are single.

New Feature.

We may have been causing some confusion.

Our thanks to Les for pointing out that our wanted area was classified as non-horse and non-commercial.

That was not our intention so we will add a new category for wanted horses. Any wanted horse ads in the old area will be moved over to the new area.

They will remain as free ads.

Use the contact form under the ad if you have something that someone else wants.

NEWSLETTER 1
LATE NEWS.

As you all probably know by now we had a virus that was coming to our site. We do not believe that it has gone out to any of you but if it has please let us know.

The virus was contained in the attachment.

The e-mail came from register@, administration@, support@.

We do not use those e-mail headers.

We will not have attachments to any of our e-mails so if there is an attachment delete it straight away.

If we have information that is too big to be contained in the body of an e-mail, we will put it on the site and direct you to the page.

We have tracked the source of the virus, and do not believe that they are aware that their computer is contaminated. A lesson for us all. If you have virus protection check your system regularly.

NEWSLETTER 1

Welcome to Australasian Horse Sale’s first newsletter. We envisage this as a regular event, with some special ones as needed.

If you would like to see a regular feature please let us know, and of course what the feature would be. I don’t think I could do a crossword each edition but if you want to do one and send it in, go for it.

Tip and ideas might be a good regular. Send some in for inclusion, and I don’t mean tips like, “Be kind to your mum”.

This, the first edition, will mainly be about hints and tips on how to get the most out of your ad on the http://australasianhorsesales.com.au site. Covered in this edition, will be:
· Pictures sell.
· Advantages of using a Feature Listing.
· A copy of the Special notice sent out last week.
· The free advertisements from the e-mail New Site.
· Examples of how enquires have helped us to help you, and to improve the site.
· A reference to an ad that shows what you can do in your ad.

Please, if you have something that you would like to submit for inclusion in the newsletter, send it in to newsletter@australasianhorsesales.com.au. Even a 4-word question can promote discussion. We do not see the newsletter becoming a forum, but we do ask for submissions, and suggestions.

Pictures Sell.

When you log in next time, go to the left hand side and left click on top rated.

We do not determine the rating; that is determined by the users who come on line and click on the more info logo to have an in depth look at the ads that appeal to them. You will see that the top rated ads are all picture ads. You will also see how many times the ads have been looked at.

Of cause they are horse ads and not trail riding ads, etc ads because the site is after all called http://australasianhorsesales.com.au and people are looking to either buy or sell a horse.

Of cause the number of hits does not mean that the item being sold will be sold, as that depends on lots of factors. However, the more times that your item is looked at the chances of a sale increases. The chances of a sale will increase if the potential buyer can see exactly what it is you are offering for sale.

Before my wife and daughters buy a horse online they like to see pictures of the horse from both sides and the front. The pictures can be on the site or forwarded to them in an e-mail. It does save a lot of time etc if more than one picture is available on the site they are looking at. All of Australasian Horse Sales picture ads offer the option of 3 or more pictures depending on the package you select.

Advantages of using a Feature Listing.

It just so happens that the top 3 rated ads are also Feature Listings.

They are seen more often than the other ads as they come up at the bottom of the menu on the home page. I will clarify that a bit and say that the feature listings are rotated so that every time you go to the home page at least 1 of the ads will be a different ad to the last time.

When a feature listing is selected the other feature listings in that category will be displayed directly below the ad selected. In other words it is possible for potential buyers to go and view horses in the category you have selected with out going in through the main menu. They would only be seeing featured listings.

They will also appear at the bottom of all ads in a category that has featured listings in it.

They cost $16.50 but we believe that they increase your chances of a sale.

On the left hand side of the main menu on the home page is the option feature listings to once again look at featured listings with out going through the main menu.

Special NoticeA problem with entering the price when submitting an ad was brought to my attention today.When submitting an ad, if you type the $ sign or any letters such as ono when entering the price, the price defaulted back to zero when the ad was submitted.The price box now has the $ sign before it and .00 after it. As can be seen from the Special Notice your input can make changes that will improve the site for you and other users of the site. In that case highlighting why so many ads had $0.00 as the price.

One of the ways that your ad can be searched for is by price so we recommend to you all to go back in and put a $ value in as it just may get your ad looked at more often.

As the result of an enquiry about how to advertise 4 stallions and up to 40 horses for sale we have included a multi item ad. They are $22.00 and allow up to 6 pictures. As you can see with 40 horses for sale through the year 6 can be advertised at a time, and as one is sold then the next one can replace it in the ad. This information means that we do not get 40 $11.00 ads, but as we say on our Home page, our aim is to see that you keep as much of the purchase price that you can.

As an example of what you can do in an ad, go to the Real Estate section, then the agistment section and look at the ad for Premier Horse Resort.

Wanted

Thanks to bcampbell we have rectified a problem in the wanted area. She wanted to place a wanted add with us. But when she selected type of package she was only offered the $16, and $22 options.

As a wanted add can be a free add, we have changed things so that a free 12 month option is also available.

We recommend this area for those of you that are looking for something specific to buy. In bcampbell's case she is looking for a float, and is prepared to pay up to $3,000.00 for the right one. Good luck.

Forum

We have just made it that you will need to register to make posts on our forum. This has, unfortunately, had to be done because of some posts that where put on the forum that where definitely not horse related. We are very broadminded, but they were not suitable for our forum. They have been deleted.
